Workshop Description

Performative teaching in times of online instruction is a challenge. Alternating between students working on grammar activities in breakout groups and then coming back to the main room for comparison can result in a monotonous see-sawing of cognitive exercises. This hands-on workshop will offer ideas on how to leave the two-dimensionality of the screen and engage in genuine exchanges by a) maximizing on household items and b) using computer technology for aesthetic expression.

About the presenter

Susanne Even is Clinical Associate Professor and Language Program Coordinator in Germanic Studies and co-editor of SCENARIO , the peer-reviewed, bilingual online journal for drama and theater in foreign language education. She has taught at University College Cork, University of Leicester in Great Britain, and in Massachusetts at MIT, Boston University and Worcester Polytechnic Institute.

As a passionate teacher and teacher educator, she writes extensively on performative pedagogy in foreign language teaching and learning, and her book Drama Grammatik. Dramapädagogische Ansätze für den Grammatikunterricht Deutsch als Fremdsprache was published in 2003. Recently, she co-authored the bilingual anthology Perfomatives Lehren Lernen Forschen – Performative Teaching Learning Research (2016). She was named 2013 Teacher of the Year by the Indiana Foreign Languages Teachers’ Association, German Post-Secondary Teacher of the Year by the Indiana Chapter of AATG, and received (together with editor Manfred Schewe) the European Language Label (ELL) Award for SCENARIO.
